Soft
2006-12-11

Today when we were caroling through the Children's Centre, we had different nurses as our tour guides in different buildings. They were all just warm and wonderful people, the kind of people that just have a smile so genuine and warm that makes you melt inside. Watching them interact with the patients that they refer to as "my kids" allowed me to see what it means for someone to put their heart into their work. That got me to think about what a special and kind-hearted person it takes to be a good nurse. Hug a good nurse, guys. They are truly special.

After we sang for these three kids at one ward, one nurse got tears in her eyes. As she wiped her eyes, she told us "sorry, I just get teary when my kids are happy. You guys and your music just made them very happy." That really touched me. People say that doctors lose the ability to empathize and become cold and withdrawn over time becasue they are overlly exposed to emotionally-charged situations. That would make you wonder: what about nurses? They are the ones that are truly at the bedside, taking care of the patients through every moment. Well, apparently, not everyone get hardened by medicine. Some remain soft. And, as I witnessed today, that softness is beautiful.
